Thinking about working remotely from your home country or relocating to the UK? Here is everything you need to know before making the move.
Employment & Compliance
Employment taxes
In the UK, employees pay Income Tax and National Insurance contributions (NIC) through the PAYE (Pay As You Earn) system. These are automatically deducted from your monthly salary.
- Income tax: Progressive rates from 0% to 45%, depending on your income bracket. The basic personal allowance (income you don’t pay tax on) is £12,570.
- National Insurance (NI): Contributions fund state benefits like pensions and healthcare.
- Payroll cost: Expect around 20–32% of your gross salary to go towards taxes and NIC. You receive the remaining amount as net pay.
- PAYE system: Employers deduct tax and NI directly from your salary, simplifying the process.

Next 33 weeks: £184.03 per week
Final 13 weeks: Unpaid
- Paternity leave: Eligible fathers/partners can take 2 weeks paid leave within the first year of birth/adoption. Pay: £184.03 per week. Leave must be taken as one block.
- Parental leave (shared): Parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay (after the 2 compulsory maternity weeks). Pay is £184.03 per week.
- Sick leave: Employees have unlimited sick leave.
- First 3 days: 100% salary paid by employer
- After that: Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) up to 28 weeks, at £116.75 per week
