Why work in Sweden?
Swedes believe success and serenity belong together. Here, you won’t have to choose between building a meaningful career and having time for what matters most. You get both and more.
You’ll join a workplace culture rooted in trust, respect, and purpose. You’ll walk into offices where your voice is heard and your time is valued. Where people don’t stay late to impress, they leave on time because life continues outside the office. And what a life it is.
Thinking about making Sweden your new home base? Whether you're eyeing a remote gig or planning a full relocation, here's everything you need to know
Employment & Compliance
Employment taxes
Taxes in Sweden are high, but they cover a wide range of expenses, including healthcare, education, pensions, and more. Here’s what you need to know:
- You don’t need to pay Social Security yourself. Your employer handles that.
- Taxes are taken directly from your paycheck every month.
- How much tax? Most people pay around 32% in local (municipal) tax. If you earn more than SEK 625,800 per year, you’ll also pay a 20% national tax on the amount above that.
That’s it! No extra forms or monthly payments, your employer sorts it all out. Contact us for more detailed information.
Leave policy
- Vacation leave: You’re entitled to 25 days of paid vacation per year, starting from day one. Some companies offer a bit more if you're senior, but 25 is the legal minimum.
- Sick leave: If you become ill, your employer covers the first 14 days of absence. After that, Swedish Social Insurance (Försäkringskassan) steps in to support you.
- Parental leave: Sweden is known for its generous parental leave:
- Parents get 480 days of paid leave per child, which can be split between both parents however they like. You don’t have to take it all right away; many parents save some for later.
- 90 days are reserved for each parent, and they can’t be transferred.
- Compensation comes from Försäkringskassan and is based on your income, capped at a certain level.
- The leave is paid by Försäkringskassan, based on your income, up to a certain cap. If you’re not eligible for income-based benefits, you’ll still get a flat-rate allowance.
Employment termination
- Notice periods: The notice period depends on how long you’ve been with the company. The minimum is 30 days, but it can be extended up to 180 days if you’ve been there for 10 years or more.
- Severance pay: There’s no legal severance pay in Sweden, but it could be included in your contract or a collective agreement.
- Termination: Termination must be for objective reasons, such as redundancy or personal issues. It can’t just be a random decision.
Hiring and contracts
Swedish employment contracts must be in writing and signed by both parties to be valid. They can be in English or bilingual (English + Swedish). The contract will cover details such as your name, start date, employment type, holiday terms, and any other important information.
Types of contracts:
- Permanent (indefinite) contract - the standard with no end date
- Fixed-term contract - for temporary needs like covering parental leave or project work.
- Probationary employment - usually up to 6 months
- Part-time or full-time - you can be hired for either. Part-time workers have the same rights just adjusted for hours worked.
Payroll & Salary Payments
Getting your paycheck in Sweden is easy and predictable.
- Salaries are paid monthly, typically on the 25th of each month. No need to take any extra action; taxes are already deducted from your paycheck.
- There’s no legal minimum wage, but wages are often set by collective agreements.
- A full-time job is 40 hours per week.
- You can work up to 48 hours per week, including overtime, averaged over a four-month period.
- Payroll costs: Employers pay about 31.42% on top of your salary in social fees (this covers things like pensions, health insurance, and parental leave)
- Overtime pay is typically higher and varies depending on your contract or the collective agreement.
Everything’s handled through your employer, so you don’t need to worry about paperwork or tax forms.
Benefits
When you work in Sweden, you get a lot more than just a paycheck:
- Vacation: 25 days + 11 public holidays.
- Insurance: Coverage for work injuries and unemployment.
- Extra Perks: Many employers offer private health insurance, pension top-ups, flexible work hours, wellness benefits, childcare support, and even learning opportunities.
Living & Working in Sweden
Monthly living costs (Stockholm)
Stockholm’s quality of life is top-notch, but it’s not the cheapest place to live. Here’s a rough breakdown of monthly costs
- Rent - around SEK 10,000–15,000 for a one-bedroom apartment (more if it's central)
- Groceries - about SEK 2,500–3,500, depending on your habits
- Transport - a monthly public transport card costs around SEK 990
- Coffee, drinks & going out - expect SEK 1,500–3,000, depending on your social life
- Utilities & Internet - around SEK 1,000–1,500 total (includes electricity, heating, water, and internet)
How to get a local ID number (Personnummer)
To live and work in Sweden long-term, you’ll need to get your personnummer (personal identity number).
- Eligibility: If you plan to live in Sweden for a year or more, you need to register with the Swedish Population Register.
- Process: Visit a local Swedish state service center to register as a resident.
Social Security Registration
Upon obtaining a personnummer, you're automatically registered in the Swedish social security system, granting access to healthcare, parental leave, and other benefits.
Banking
To get paid in Sweden, you’ll need a bank account. It’s pretty simple:
- You’ll need a valid ID, personnummer, and proof of address.
- Popular banks: Swedbank, SEB, Nordea, Handelsbanken, Ikano Bank, Länsförsäkringar Bank.
Housing and rental process
- Finding a home: You can find rental properties through housing agencies, online platforms, or municipal housing queues.
- Tenant rights: Tenants have strong rights in Sweden, including protection from unfair evictions and the right to reasonable rent.
- Illegal contracts: Buying or selling rental contracts is illegal and can lead to criminal charges.
Healthcare system
- Access: Healthcare is tax-funded meaning you get access to great care without breaking the bank.
- Costs: You’ll pay a small fee for doctor visits, and there’s a yearly cap on out-of-pocket expenses.
Driving and public transport
- Public Transport: Sweden’s public transport system is efficient, with buses, trains, and subways everywhere.
- Driving: If you’re from the EU/EEA, your license is good to go. If not, you may need to exchange your license for a Swedish one after a certain period.
Emergency and important contacts
- Emergency Number: 112 for police, fire, and medical emergencies.
Work permits and Visa requirements
- EU/EEA citizens: You don’t need a work permit. Just register if you’re staying long-term.
- Non-EU/EEA citizens: You’ll need a job offer to apply. The job must pay at least SEK 13,000/month before tax.
Work permits are usually valid for 2 years and can be extended.
