Why work in Lithuania?
Small country, big vibe. Lithuania is where nature meets tech, where medieval charm lives next to modern innovation. You’ll find career opportunities in booming industries like fintech, IT, and shared services, plus a lifestyle that’s affordable, balanced, and just the right kind of quirky. Think fast internet, short commutes, lakes after work, and warm bread from the local market.

Employment & Compliance
Employment Taxes
Taxes are simple and predictable:
- Flat income tax rate: 20% on employment income.
- Social security contributions (employee side): around 19.5%, which covers pensions, health insurance, and unemployment benefits.
- Employers also contribute on top of your gross salary (but you don’t pay that yourself).
What you see in your contract is usually close to what you actually get paid out, no surprises.
Leave policy
Lithuania takes rest seriously. You get:
- 20 working days of paid vacation per year (after 6 months of work).
- Paid sick leave, covered by the employer for the first 2 days, then by the state.
- Paid parental leave: up to 2 years, with flexible payment options.
- Public holidays: 13 official ones, and if they fall on a weekend, you don’t get them moved—but you do get to enjoy Midsummer bonfires.
Employment termination
Both employees and employers can terminate a contract with proper notice:
- Standard notice: 1 month if you’ve been with the company over a year, 2 weeks if less.
- Probation period: Up to 3 months, and can be ended with 3 days' notice.
- Severance pay applies in some cases—typically 1–2 months’ salary depending on how long you’ve worked.
Hiring and contract
You’ll usually sign:
- A fixed-term or indefinite contract.
- Contracts are written, often in Lithuanian and English.
- You must get a copy of your employment contract before your first day.
Remote contracts are common too, especially in tech or creative work.
Payroll and salary payments
- Salaries are paid monthly, usually by the last working day of the month.
- Payments are made in euros directly into your Lithuanian bank account.
- Payslips are provided each month with a breakdown of your earnings and deductions.
Benefits
While not always required, most companies offer perks like:
- Health insurance or dental plans.
- Meal vouchers or lunch cards.
- Gym memberships or wellness budgets.
- Training & upskilling budgets especially in IT and finance.
Parental leave and child benefits are strong, and companies are becoming increasingly flexible with remote and hybrid work.

How to get a local ID number
Everyone working or living in Lithuania needs a Personal Identification Number (Asmens kodas).
Here’s how:
- If you’re relocating, you’ll receive it when you register your residence permit.
- If you’re an EU citizen: Apply at the Migration Department after declaring your place of residence.
- Remote workers may need to obtain a temporary residence and work permit first, and then apply for an ID.
Social Security Registration
- Your employer registers you for social security (Sodra).
- Contributions cover pensions, healthcare, maternity leave, and unemployment benefits.
- No action needed from your side, confirm your coverage once you’re onboarded.
Banking
Opening a bank account is pretty straightforward:
- You’ll need your passport, residence permit, and personal ID number.
- Popular banks include Swedbank, SEB, and Luminor.
- Or go with Revolut or N26 for digital banking.
Housing & rental process
Renting is straightforward:
- Lease agreements are typically for 6–12 months, with the option to extend.
- Deposits: Usually 1–2 months’ rent.
- Tenants have solid rights: landlords must give advance notice for eviction or price increases.
Pro tip: Use platforms like aruodas.lt to find your next home.
Healthcare system
- Lithuania has a universal healthcare system funded by social contributions.
- Once you’re registered and contributing, you can use public clinics and hospitals.
- Many expats opt for private insurance for faster service or broader coverage.
Driving and public transport
- Public transport in cities is cheap, clean, and reliable.
- A monthly pass in Vilnius is just €29.
- You can drive with an EU license; others may need to exchange theirs.
- Parking in city centers is paid, but affordable.
