How to get a local ID number (NAV)
- Once you become a resident (with a valid work contract etc.), you’ll register with the relevant Hungarian authorities. They’ll issue you tax ID / personal ID needed for employment and taxation.
- Your employer typically guides you through obtaining the tax identification number (NAV).
Social security registration
- When you start employment, your employer registers you into the social security system.
- This gives you rights to health insurance, pension, unemployment benefits.
Banking
- You’ll likely open a Hungarian bank account for salary payments. Common banks: OTP Bank, K&H Bank, Erste Bank, CIB Bank, Raiffeisen Bank.
- Expect to provide proof of identity (passport or EU ID), proof of address (rental contract or utility bill), sometimes employment contract.
- Many banks offer online banking and English support in bigger branches.
Housing and rental process
- Rentals are common apartment flats in Budapest & other cities. You’ll typically sign a lease (12 months often) with a security deposit (often 1-2 months’ rent).
- Landlords may ask for references, proof of income.
- Tenant rights: landlord must maintain the apartment, carry out agreed repairs. Notice periods apply if landlord wants to end the lease. Always check contract for allowed modifications.
Healthcare system
- Hungary has a public healthcare system funded via social security contributions. Once registered, you’ll have access to basics.
- For faster, more comfortable service, many people use private clinics or private insurance.
- Emergency care is available via public hospitals.
Driving and public transport
- Public transport in cities (especially Budapest) is good: buses, trams, metro. A monthly pass is affordable.
- Driving: if you're an EU license holder, generally accepted. Non-EU you might need to exchange/validate license after some time. Roads are decent. Be aware of winter conditions if you're outside big cities.
Emergency and important contacts
- Ambulance, fire, police: 112
Work permit and visa requirements
- EU / EEA / Swiss citizens: Free to work, but for longer stays you might register your residence.
- Non-EU citizens: Need a valid work permit + visa for stays over 90 days in many cases. Common routes: Single Permit (combines work + residence), EU Blue Card if highly qualified, ICT permits for certain intra-company transfers.
- Must present documents like a valid passport, an employment contract, qualifications, proof of accommodation, and a health insurance.
- Processing can take several weeks to months.
Business culture and work norms
- Punctuality counts. Being late to meetings is frowned upon.
- Hierarchies exist, but many workplaces (especially in tech and startups) are more casual and flat.
- Communication is often direct: people will expect you to be clear, honest. But that doesn’t mean unfriendly, just efficient.
- Work-life balance is more than a phrase. Hungarians value time off, family and relaxation.
