Why work in Finland?

Finland isn’t just the land of a thousand lakes; it’s the land of balance, belonging, and beautiful simplicity. With world-class public services, a deep respect for nature, and a culture that values both independence and community, it’s no wonder Finland consistently ranks among the happiest countries on Earth. Whether you’re into tech, design, education, or want to live somewhere that feels calm, safe, and fair, you’ll feel right at home here.

Employment & Compliance

Employment taxes
  • Income tax: Progressive income tax rates ranging from 6% to 32%.
  • Municipal tax: Flat rate set by the employee's municipality of residence. Rates vary significantly between municipalities (from around 4% to over 10%).
  • Public broadcasting tax: A fixed annual amount, often collected through withholding.
Leave policy
  • Vacation days: 30 days of paid time off per year, calculated from the 1st of April to the end of March.
  • Public holidays: 13 public holidays based on the location of the employee
  • Maternity leave: 105 paid working days. Leaves start 30 days before the birth and end 75 days after. Kela (Social insurance) pays a minimum of EUR 29.05/day, with the exact amount based on the employee's annual salary. Leave can be extended using parental leave.
  • Paternity leave: 54 paid working days. Maternity leave can overlap with up to 18 days. The rest must be taken in 2 separate periods before the child turns 2.
  • Parental leave: 158 paid working days. Both parents can share this leave, which starts after maternity leave. Extended childcare leave is available until the child reaches the age of 3.
  • Sick leave: Up to 300 days of paid sick leave. The first 10 days, the employer pays 100% (50% if employed less than a month). From day 11 onward, Kela (Social insurance) covers 40-60% of the salary.

Employment termination

Termination must be based on fair and objective reasons, such as voluntary resignation by the employee, mutual agreement, or unilateral termination by the employer due to the completion of a probation period, objective grounds like redundancy, disciplinary dismissal for misconduct, performance issues due to unsuitability for the job, or the expiration of a fixed-term contract. Notice periods depend on your tenure with the company, ranging from 1 to 6 months.

Hiring and contracts
  • Finnish law requires written employment contracts that detail job duties, salary, working hours, and other relevant terms.
  • Contract types: indefinite (permanent) and fixed-term. Indefinite employment is the standard and preferred form, offering employees greater security. Fixed-term employment is only permitted under specific, limited circumstances defined by the Working Environment Act.
Payroll and salary payments
  • Standard working hours: limited to a maximum of 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week.
  • Overtime pay: Any work beyond the standard working hours is considered overtime and must be compensated at a higher rate (150% of the hourly rate for the first two hours and 200% of the hourly rate for subsequent hours).
  • Payroll cycle: Salaries are typically paid monthly, at the end of each month.
  • Bonuses & Allowances: Common bonuses include performance bonuses, and allowances may include meal and transport allowances, depending on the employer.
Benefits
  • Mandatory Benefits: Employees in Finland are entitled to various mandatory benefits, including pension contributions, occupational injury insurance, and public health insurance.
  • Optional Benefits: Some employers may offer additional benefits such as private healthcare, life insurance, and other perks.
