Leave policy
  • Paid vacation: Minimum 20 working days per year plus 13 public holidays.
  • Sick leave: Paid by employer for the first 42 days (70% of salary). After that, the state covers it.
  • Maternity leave: 6 mandatory months fully covered and extended up to 1 year, or three years for twins, triplets, or subsequent children, with reduced pay.
  • Paternity leave: Up to 10 paid working days (15 for twins or more).
  • Parental leave: Shareable between parents until the child turns 8 (entitlement depends on the age and duration of previous leave).
Employment termination
  • Notice periods vary by length of employment (2 weeks to 3 months).
  • Severance pay: Required after 2+ years of service.
  • Employers must provide written justification and follow strict procedures for lawful dismissal.

How to get a local ID number (OIB)
  • Everyone working or living in Croatia needs an OIB (personal ID number).

Social security registration
  • Employers register you for social insurance with the Croatian Pension Insurance Institute (HZMO) and Health Insurance Fund (HZZO).
  • Freelancers/self-employed register themselves.
