How to get a local ID number (TIN)

To work or live in Azerbaijan, you’ll need a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN).

  • If you’re employed, your employer usually applies for it on your behalf
  • Remote workers or freelancers can apply at a local tax office or online via the Ministry of Taxes
Social security registration

Employers handle social security registration when you start working. Contributions are deducted from your salary and submitted to the State Social Protection Fund that covers pensions, maternity benefits, and more.

Banking

Opening a bank account is straightforward, usually just a passport and proof of address are needed. Popular banks include:

  • Kapital Bank
  • International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA)
  • Bank Respublika
  • Pasha Bank

You can manage everything online, but visiting a branch is still common for setup.

Housing and rental process
  • Most rentals come furnished
  • Standard lease: 6 - 12 months
  • Deposit: Usually 1 - 2 months' rent
  • Rent is paid monthly
  • Tenant rights: You have the right to privacy, safety, and a habitable home. Always ask for a written contract.

Real estate agents are widely used and can help you navigate the market (fee is usually one month’s rent).

Healthcare system
  • Public healthcare exists but can be limited in quality and access
  • Many expats and locals use private clinics, affordable and high-quality
  • Consider private health insurance for broader access and faster service
Driving and public transport
  • You’ll need to exchange your foreign license for a local one if you’re staying long-term
  • Public transport: Buses, metro, and taxis are cheap and widely available
  • Bolt and Uber are commonly used
  • Biking isn’t yet widespread, but it’s growing in popularity

  • Work permits are issued for up to 1 year and are renewable
  • Remote workers should look into residence permits under self-employment or freelancing, but options are limited
Business culture and work norms
  • Punctuality and professionalism are highly valued
  • Hierarchies matter, titles are respected
  • Dress code is usually formal
  • Relationships matter: trust is built slowly but goes a long way
